Maybe Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is just holding his forces in reserve. On the other hand, this was the best he could do on possibly the biggest day for democracy in the history of the Middle East? An unverified statement from the Zarqawi organization posted on the Internet Sunday night said, "We have spoiled their party. We have struck them with grievous attacks ... Before this statement was published, 13 lions from the martyrs brigade of the Al-Qaeda Group of Jihad in the Land of the Two Rivers attacked centers of the infidel in various regions of Iraq." Yeah, right. At least he's down another 13 martyrs. That's Zarqawi's statement? "We spoiled their party"? After Sunday, I had expected that the guy who had denounced the elections and democracy itself to have a little more... fury. Some pledges to punish the 60 percent who turned out, some rage, some defiance. Some acknowledgement that a majority of the Iraqi people ignored his warnings. Instead we're getting... spin? "Well, it was a better day for the insurgency than everybody thought"? I've heard more plausible lines from Chris Lehane. You know who Zarqawi sounds like? A certain fellow quoted on the opposite page of the Times: Kerry said he "lost to an incumbent president by a closer margin than an incumbent president has ever won re-election before in the history of the country." But so what? Incumbent presidents, after all, have lost lots of re-election bids. It's time to start putting down serious money betting against Zarqawi and his band of thugs when they're left to insist that they succeeded in ruining the elections. If this statement is the real deal, Abu is asking the Iraqis, "who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?" The last time I heard that argument was... oh, CBS' defense of the fake memos?
