Countrywide Financial Q4 earnings fall 26% By Steve Gelsi
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Countrywide Financial (CFC: news, chart, profile) on Wednesday reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $343 million, or 56 cents per share, down 26 percent from $465 million, or 94 cents per share in the year-ago period. Pre-tax earnings in the mortgage banking segment were $220 million, down from $680 million. The Calabasas, Calif. financing firm was expected to earn 80 cents per share, according to a survey of analysts by Thomson Financial. The company cited a higher tax rate, a substantial flattening of the bond yield curve, a tightening of mortgage-swap spreads and a reduction in interest rate volatility. The company also cited a charge in its insurance segment related to hurricane losses in Florida of 4 cents per share. Shares rose $1.03 to $38.03 on Tuesday.
