A&E Buys Rights to Rerun 'Sopranos'

In a deal that will bring television's best-known mafia family to basic cable, A&E network said yesterday that it had reached agreement with HBO to buy the syndication rights to "The Sopranos" and that it would begin broadcasting those episodes in fall 2006.

While neither A&E nor HBO would characterize the financial terms of the deal, two people who had been briefed on it said that A&E had agreed to pay at least $2.5 million per episode. That translates to more than $162.5 million for the 65 episodes of "The Sopranos" that HBO aired in the series' first five seasons - and at least $25 million more for the 10 original episodes that HBO has promised for the sixth season, which is scheduled to begin early next year.

The $2.5 million-an-episode price is believed to be a record for a drama sold into syndication, one that would eclipse the estimated $1.9 million paid by Bravo and USA in December for the syndication rights to "Law and Order: Criminal Intent."
