I believe "Our Libs" here suffer from a total lack of sense of humor. They take everything incl. themselves way too seriously and seemingly fail to recognize the sport of the debate and thus the funniest part of it. Like when they get into the "serious mode" only and as some kind of compensation then take to bad language and start calling names.

Since I don't know that many real life liberals I wonder if that is something specific to our thread or just a common charateristic of people to the (far) left?

The name calling and anger is not typical of liberals. In fact, I am surprised by it. Its more typical of what you experience on the GW Bush thread from the righties on that thread. I think you may underestimate the unhappiness with Bush's policies that resides in this country. He does not have a mandate but he operates as if he does. There will be a backlash. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I think in real life, people abide by social norms more often and resort to name calling less. Inhibitions play a larger role when you are staring your debate partner in the face as you make your point.

BTW, the company I work for is full of liberals and we go at it daily. Some of my best friends at work are liberals. In fact, it was through those debates that I came around to the conclusion that I needed to vote for Bush. But my liberal friends don't call me shithead or asshole or any of those other things. They are more respectful, even if they disagree with some of my beliefs. But that calls for maturity.

I suspect we have a lot of young people on these threads who haven't learned how to debate without insult. And we have a couple of oldsters who are so past caring what anyone thinks, that they too resort to insults. I hope I never grow too old to be respectful or take myself or others too seriously. :)

Taro, the best humor is witty humor.

It takes wit to come up with something clever and funny, without the attacks. Johnny Carson seemed to be a humorous person without making disparaging remarks. Did you ever see him?
