for example charging me a monthly fee of about $4.00 for not maintaining min balance for free checking..

I have no problem risking paying four bucks a month to not have to deal with reviewing bank statements. There are several questions at play here. One is the probability of a bank error. Another is the probability of that error being in the bank's favor. Another is your willingness and ability to absorb the loss in the unlikely event that there should be one. Another is whether you would report an error in your favor if you found one. Another is what your time and sanity are worth to you.

I open my mail once a year at tax time. The rest of the year I don't give it a thought other that occasionally tripping over the boxes of unopened mail that litter my hallway. <g> I really like being free of all that. Other folks have different priorities.

As for checking accounts, I don't have one. Don't have any bank account at all. It's been a long time since I had a need for one. So maintaining a minimum balance is a non-issue.
