The point was that in WWII, most people were not so self centered then, and understood that their country was in grave peril. Therefore, they understood themselves and their families were in peril as well. 16.5 million people all pulling on the same rope is a mighty accomplishment!!!

I will agree that this is a different kind of war. After seeing "Dirty War", the visuals made it clear that we need armies of people to help with the wounded, and to decontaminate...and to help with evacuations, and all the etcs that such a situation would require. These 'armies' of people wouldn't necessarily have to be Military.

Personally, I think that should be one of the tasks of Homeland Security....to define what we might need with the different problems that might come up, and to alert the citizens as to what capabilities are needed. Those of us who wish to be involved, will be trained to be helpful. Those who don't wish to volunteer might have to fend for themselves.
