As long as the US doesn't default on the bonds, no problem. I certainly favor selling the bonds instead of just printing money to cover the deficit. But servicing the interest on those bonds is a large fraction of the budget. And getting larger. Not that anyone seems to care. Except for the ones trying to cook up a crisis to kill off SS.

Still the contrast between Clinton's budget defict reduction efforts and Bush's fiscal madness are glaring, SS surplus playing an equal role in both cases as you just pointed out.
