Actually you have been in the Great Basin when you were from Elko to Tonopah..:). From a geology POV, It is sort of everything from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the Wasatch range and down into southern Arizona and even into Mexico... It is also called the Basin and Range province..

BTW, "The Great Basin National Park" on the Nevada/Utah border is one of our newest, if not the latest NP... A beautiful place that I have not actually been in, but have been all around. I have seen Mt. Wheeler but have not climbed it.. After Mt. Rose, we can do Wheeler, almost 3000 feet more.. :)
