The founders of Google couldn't find a buyer for their technology, but they didn't give up. They kept searching for a buyer until they found investors. Then they built the company themselves instead of selling out. IBM made ghastly mistakes with their relationship with Microsoft, making many a mistep which allowed Microsoft get a virtual lock on the PC OS. IBM didn't just fold their cards and decide that they would no longer be in business. Instead, they continued to be a very successful company in many other market segments. In the 1960's the U.S. watched dumbfounded as Russia put sputnik into orbit and became the leader in space exploration. The U.S. didn't give up, but redoubled their efforts to become a world leader in space and reached the moon in 1969. The U.S. battled Russia in many theaters throughout the cold war. Some notable losses included Vietnam where the Communists overran our forces and gained a clear victory over the U.S. However, the U.S. didn't bring all our forces home and declare ourselves the loser of the Cold War. Instead, the U.S. continued to fight where the fight was winnable. The Cold War ended symbolically with the tearing down of the Berlin wall and then ended in fact with the crumbling of the Soviet States, many of which are now viable Democracies. There are millions of stories of mistakes made that didn't lead to failure. The only true failure is giving up, which clearly you and John have already done. In the war on terrorism, unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of giving up. The Fundamentalists are in this to the death. So we just have to make sure they are the ones who meet the untimely end first and we have to make sure they don't seduce too many more moderates along the way.
