The USA program is basically the opposite, isn't it? The Eastern European countries are more capitalistic than the USA, possibly because they have personally felt the pain of communism fail. Sometimes I get a bad sense that our country is seriously headed down the wrong direction, that some day we'll wake up and go "oh no." Look no further than the immigration program - nearly impossible for PhD types to enter this country (am still hearing PhD visas are being turned down so some of these top students are attending schools in other countries), meanwhile we have no border policy whatsoever. During the downturn a contact of mine told me about unemployed hightech workers that she knew who were ill, thin, but out of money so they couldn't see a doctor, meanwhile her healthy contacts from south america were able to see a doctor here for free (annual physical exam, colds, etc.). She's from south america and had complete coverage - physical exam, free mammogramm too. How come only the unemployed hightech worker gets the raw deal, while others (according to her) get free medical care in the bay area? The contrast she described was startling. Not something you would read about in our newspaper. RE: "stock index funds can be managed by a computer, and given the amounts of money, the management fees should be miniscule." Had *exactly* the same thought. Come on, there should be almost no fee if it's an index fund. Regards, Amy J
