Well, whether it galls you or not, a strict interpretation of most religions WILL BE at odds with democracy and freedom. For example, if the pope says condoms are against Catholic rules, but the nation-state says condoms are legal, how do you get around that?

Religions generally say things are "wrong" or "immoral", or perhaps "against the will of God". You can believe that in a very strict way about say condom use or adultery, or drinking, or gambling or whatever, without actually pushing for such things to be illegal. A strictly religious person can believe in a large degree of freedom, and pluralism, and democracy.
