I swear this is true. A few years back the Mpls Star-Tribune ran an editorial saying the solution to the SS problem was to raise the interest rate paid on the Treasury bonds in the SS trust fund.

I kid you not. I should have saved it but I didn't.

All payments come from the government from its total taxes collected whether SS tax or income tax etc

It's relevant that SS taxes and income taxes have different bases--a paradigm shift. What you're talking about would be to have SS benefits paid out of general revenues, which are paid by non-workers such as investors and retirees.
