maybe defense is 1/3 of our "discretionary" budget. Of course, that all depends on what your definition of "discretionary" is. ;-)

Hmm... I will have to look into it. I seem to recall that during Eisenhower and Kenned era, defense was around 50% of the entire federal budget. This before a lot of the "non-discretionary" spending even existed, and SS was still small, working population large, people had more children, old people died shortly after retiring (if they lived that long).
