Vice President Cheney requested and got his fifth and last deferment in 1966. He requested his deferment and let his draft board know that he just had a child. So his draft board gave him a deferment - just like 5 million other Americans that year.

Senator Kerry requested and was denied his fifth and last deferment in 1966. The Senator requested his deferment and told his draft board that he wanted to study in Paris for a year. His draft board denied his request deferment. Was the Senator cowardly for seeking his deferment? I don't think so.

As we all know, President Bush joined the Texas Air National Guard as a pilot. In the 60's and early 70's, a fighter pilot was considered one of the most dangerous occupations in the military - even at peace time. This is why pilot slots were available for President Bush. When one is trying to dodge active duty in general, and combat duty in particular, fighter pilot in the Air National Guard is not where one would want to be. During the 60's pilots from the Texas Air National Guard did serve in Vietnam. In fact during the Vietnam War, entire squadrons from several Air National Guards were shipped off to Vietnam - and faced combat.
