The proposal is not coming from conservatives. It is coming from Neocons. They don't want social security.

Neocon does not equal "extreme conservative" or for that matter "libertarian conservative". To the extent that there can be said to be a neo-con movement and that it can be said to have shared policy ideas an assertive foriegn policy to try and encourage democracy and freedom of around the world might be considered one of them. Changing social security is not. I'm sure that there are a bunch of neo-cons who want to change social security, there are also non "neo-con" conservatives, libertarians, even some liberals who want to change it. Similarly there are people from all groups who oppose major change in social security (ok you probably won't find a lot of hard core libertarians who oppose major change in social security but you will find ones who oppose Bush's plans).

Neocons. They don't want social security. Their philosophy of rule by the elite requires that the masses be dependant upon the nobles oblige of the philosopher kings.

"Requiring that the masses be dependant upon the nobles oblige of the philosopher kings", has just about zero connection with either neocons or social security reform.

Neoconservatism has nothing to do with domestic policy -- neocons tend to be all over the map on that.

Traditional conservatives have been against SS since FDR's time. Don't pin this one on the neos in particular.
