IMO, it is reasonable for a poster to ask that, just as it's reasonable to ask not to be called an idiot, a lousy investor, or a California airhead. The request can be made but does not have to be honored.

If someone does not want an old post disclosing their identity (or anything else) to be used, they should get a new account.

how is anyone to know an old alias is their real 3d name?

unless they say it is

why would they say it is?

there have been so many aliases used on SI

Sorry Dave, but I must disagree.

Anyone who posts on a public forum gave up any expectation of
privacy to whatever they posted the minute they freely made
that info public.

Why should anyone be allowed to decide after the fact that
they want their privacy protected?

If it's that important to them, they should, as Bill so aptly
put it, "have to buy a brand new subscription so that my
old posts can't be linked back to <their> current screen
name. That seems a better solution than dragging you
guys in for a ruling on every instance."
