But Hitchens doesn't counter the point of the NYT posting, which is simply (to me) that just like in Vietnam, the elections in Iraq don't mean that the situation has gotten anywhere near the worst it's going to get, or even that we're going to be able to "win" there and create a thriving democracy.

It means that Iraq passed the first test.

As far as the context, the world is much different today, when world's democracies are in an unassailable position, vs. being on the defensive vs. powerfull adversaries.

There is also a huge difference in the quality of the leadership on the US side, and the level of maturity of the US population that just wasn't there in the 60s and 70s.
