One has to ask whether it's a bigger boondoggle to spend on people or corrupt and unethical business growth. Were people better off with NAFTA or Social Security? Who benefits more in the long run? I realized at 18 that communism was unrealistic because people weren't rewarded for their contributions. But neither is unchecked capitalism. I went to Hong Kong in the 1980's and saw this multiple amputee selling pencils amongst the tall high-rises, sitting on a little home-made plywood cart. A sad portrait of unbridled capitalism. No one should be out on a street begging for money when they find themselves in those straits.
