re: I guess if you don't count social security and medicare as part of the budget, and then you count any spending that is even vaguely related to the military you could come up with a figure like 50% but there doesn't seem much point in calculating the percentages that way unless your whole aim is to make the number as big as possible.

It's not my claim and I don't buy it either. These folks even count the interest on the debt generated from defense. But I do think it is under counted in the raw numbers.
