Dave, that sounds like a veiled threat.

:-(

FWIW, the sad truth is that some folks can't comprehend that
their opinions are not all rock solid fact, let alone that
they could ever possibly be wrong. When their opinions are
questioned in a reality based manner (IE, attack the
message), they take it as a personal attack. Then they
inappropriately respond with personal attacks (inasmuch as
they can get away with on these threads) due to their own
misperception of reality. Unfortunately they also tend not to
see their responses as personal attacks, but rather
statements of fact, setting the record straight.

And other people will simply not let that behavior go
uncontested. IMO, these folks seem to have a legitimate gripe.

IMO, that is part of the reason you are here tonight.

<<This site would be pretty boring and of little value if everyone agreed on all issues>>

I think what Dave is trying to say here is stay on issue and voice your opinion about the issue.

That seems pretty fair and rational to me.

"Folks, there is a very simple rule of thumb ...

The phrase "Rule of Thumb" comes from English Common
Law which deemed it a man's right to beat his wife
with a stick no thicker than the diameter of his thumb.

Now I see a long winded love letter from Augustas Gloop proclaiming relationships on SI to be likened to a marriage... hmmmm

So are you planning to go beat Christine Grace Barflee and Alexas The Goof or what ever there names are?

"Value the differences among us, and attack the message..."

I personally find that to be a disgusting message. Just thought I should be honest about that.

Take care,
Jewel

And, it wouldn't hurt to keep in mind that this is an investment-oriented discussion site. The intra-thread poltical ideology wars are of no value to us, and in fact detract from the site by consuming limited resources better utilized elsewhere.

It's worthwhile for everyone to consider if they want to be part of the problem or part of the solution.

I find that a bit troubling.

Are you saying that the Political and Coffee Shop threads take up too much bandwidth? That they are not a valuable component of SI that are worth keeping?

I've been around SI since 1996, and over the years have been an active participant in various stock and investment threads. Fact is, however, its the Coffee Shop and Political threads at SI that interest me (and I dare say a number of others).

This isn't 1999 anymore Dave, when the market was red hot and people were making money hand over fist. I could be wrong, and I certainly don't have the data (presumably you and Bob do), but I'm not sure how long SI would be a viable site if the owners decided to pitch the Political and Coffee Shop threads overboard.

So, can you clarify? What are your thoughts, and Bob's as well, on the future of the SI Political and Coffee Shop threads? I just paid up $20 to upgrade my membership, as have a number of others, and I would be very disappointed to learn that management wants to take this site back to having only an investment/stock trading focus.
