I wouldn't want to be some vole walking around by myself in that neighborhood!

altair,
interesting that you should mention that.
a friend and i were speculating on the density
of mice and voles that would be required to keep
these Great Gray owls hunting in the same fields
for the past several weeks (most have been in certain
locations for 3-4 weeks). The rodent population
must be high as there are groups of several GGOs
hunting in the same fields.
We don't usually see GGOs here as they are from
the northern boreal forests and have only come
down to this area due to a low rodent population cycle
up north.

btw, in case you're interested,
here are some shots of the Trumpeter swans
which I took last winter.
As you can see from some of the shots,
the location is at a narrows between two large lakes.
There's a causeway that crosses the narrows
with a bridge and locks part way across.
The swans hang around in an open reach of water
where the current flows at its fastest under the bridge.
Someone in the area has been putting out a shovel of grain
for the swans each day, so that supplements any food
they're catching in the water.
Beautiful big birds that make the Canada geese look
like tiny midgets next to them.
There's also a view of the nearby town of Westport
looking down from Spy Rock on Foley Mountain.
And in case you're wondering, that spot on top of
the causeway by the open water is one of the coldest places
that I know of... brrrhhhh!!!!!
