You can pretty safely assume that if the word 'Democratic' is in the name, they probably aren't. And elections don't necessarily mean democracy. Iraq under Saddam regularly had elections. So did the GDR and the USSR...


An interesting analysis of democratic nations in the world:

There are 22 nations that get the top rating for political rights and civil liberties...........the US ranked 13th out of 22. There are another 14 nations with a top rating in political rates and a lesser rating for civil liberties.

The remaining world nations fall into various forms of an authoritarian/democratic blending.
