The article should have been written on Syria ,

Syria seems to be a "Soprano" operation with a Bathist overlay. If raids would do some good, fine. We should insist they get out of Lebanon, I think that is a move that would be accepted politically and would help against the terrorists there.

I suspect that a raid on Iran would help the Mullahs. It's so difficult to figure out what would work there.

Not invasion but precision bombings and maybe special forces operations.

I keep hearing that last...but do not believe it will happen except to run reconnaissance Ops as part of pre-invasion planning.

No SF unit has the capability to take out an enemy nuclear weapons production facility and have any reasonable expectation to survive. Yet that is not the biggest issue. SF has a very limited number of folks who can pass as locals in that environment. That is a real constraint.

Nor do I believe an invasion of Iran is imminent. Certainly Pentagon planners are looking at that option, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Iran just doesn't have the horror stories emanating from within that we heard from pre-invasion Iraq.

We have Iran surrounded. There are sufficient Iranian dissidents to support. There are open Iranian borders to Afghanistan and Iraq to allow the free flow of whatever we want to move around. That should be enough for now. Besides, we need to consolidate our gains in Afghanistan and Iraq first.

On the other hand, if Iran gets stupid, all bets are off. In that case, I would not rule out a nuclear option for us.
