The Chilean model mandates a percentage to be invested and avenues within the private sector for investing it. It does not give people the opportunity to opt out.

All those who criticize the SS system must be reminded that it was based on the model of what appeared to be successful private programs. We have innovated the private systems since then, mandating the money be invested as the obligation is incurred. Private retirement accounts had not been forced to accrue in advance yet, why would anyone in government do what was not done in business?

The real question is simply: Government has mandated improvements in private retirement accounts. Why has government not followed suit?

If we cannot tackle SS, then we will never get to the real problem. Medicare is several times as large of a problem. Medical costs are rising and retirees are living longer. Rationing of medical care is likely unless Medicare is addressed. We will not address it until after SS is mended.
