Z, I believe that honesty is the best policy. I WANT to think that I can trust the government. You get to know the number of dead and wounded. Parading all the gory detail is a recipe to undermine the national resolve and to lose the war. Maybe you should check the reporting from WWII, and think of what might have happened if the country was receiving a daily dish of pictures of US soldiers torn to pieces, their flash and body parts splattered all over the place.
