Americans are so parochial in their outlook that, more often than not, they know very little about people and places outside America. To be sure their education system is largely responsible for this --- it is a system calculated to dumb-down the citizenry so that they could easily be manipulated to swallow unquestioningly stuff their government throw at them.

An atlas to keep reporters on right track

LONDON - US SECRETARY of State Condoleezza Rice gave small world atlases to all the reporters accompanying her on her eight-day, nine-country trip to Europe and the Middle East.

'We're going to travel a lot, and I wouldn't want anybody to feel lost,' she said as she handed out 18 copies on board her plane from Washington to London.

Americans are often mocked abroad for their perceived lack of knowledge of the outside world - surveys sometimes show American kids cannot even locate neighbours Canada and Mexico.

The souvenir for journalists on her inaugural trip was also Dr Rice's way of showing she will travel widely to fulfil her pledge that 'the time for diplomacy is now'. -- AP, Reuters
