I think the past policies of supporting tyrants to bring short term stability always comes with a cost. Supporting the Shah brought about the price we are paying now. Unfortunately, the Iranian people are the ones who bear the greatest price, because they are not free to choose their own government.

It's clear we've made mistakes in the past. However, despite whatever mistakes we've made, we simply cannot afford for Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. If Europe is not successful, then bombing Iran to stop their program is worth it. The alternative is a country that despises us and is the largest worldwide supporter of terrorism with nukes. The likelihood of a nuclear detonation within the U.S. would go skyhigh. If I was the leader of this country, there is nothing I wouldn't do to ensure the Iranians never get nukes. I'm pretty sure Bush is of the same mind.
