I would have had Eastwood's character take Swanks' home with him from the hospital. As you know his daughter never corresponded to him. Hillary would have filled that gap that Clint had in his heart.
She would have lived, and been loved and cared for by Clint and Morgan Freeman.
She would have been rehabilitated to some extent and gone to college.

Then I would have cried for happy.

My kids and I have a phrase for movies that were inspirationally great until the end. We call them "City Of Angels" movies.
That one, with Nicholas Cage was headed for a "10" in our books, right up until the last 5 minutes. The sad ending that could have easily been altered to be uplifting and a close to perfect flick.
