sorry if i offended you

Not offended. Just observing. Academically. <g> Seriously, I really am fascinated by some patterns of response.

your position made no sense to me.. to buy down a house and elect to pay taxes vs moving your ira account to a tax free tax account and pay taxes .. is same thing imo.

The difference I see is that people have always paid taxes on the profits from a home. You sold under those conditions. Then they changed the rules.

With IRAs, they were set up to pay taxes on withdrawal rather than on deposit. They they changed that so you could pay the taxes up front and encouraged people to convert and pay the taxes. So far so good.

But this was just a few years ago. So if they change it again as you suggested so that folks in the old IRAs get a benefit for free that others who converted just finished paying for a few years ago at the encouragement of the powers that be, that seems different to me. The difference is the jerking around.

Let's try a different example. Say that Bush's SS plan is put into effect and people are encouraged to take advantage of private accounts. Then, say ten years after people follow Bush's advice and convert, congress decides to up SS benefits for people who didn't convert so they end up better off than those who followed Bush's advice. Do you think that's a good thing? Seems to me that we have to be able to trust our government to not bait and switch. That's not to say we can't change things, only that we don't jerk people around. We need a certain stability and a certain trust.
