Israel’s Dimona reactor claims lives of its personnel

Employees at Israel’s secret nuclear facility, Dimona, said that it is claiming the lives of its personnel and accused its management of ignoring their health conditions.

The Israeli daily "Yediot Ahronot" cited some of the employees as saying that two engineers working in Dimona’s secret sites suffered brain tumors six years ago then died within a short period.

The paper added that Dimona’s employees accused its management of ignoring their health conditions, and added that they set up a committee that aims at examining the spread of cancer among the personnel.

It also reported that several employees died of cancer, noting that authorities of the reactor denied that their death was related to the radiation activities conducted in the facility.

More than 45 lawsuits have been filed so far by relatives of the reactor’s engineers and technicians against its authority demanding 50 million dollars in compensation for the damages they sustained during their work period.

Several studies by specialized Israeli centers confirmed that radioactive and nuclear radiations were leaking out of Dimona due to malfunctions attributed to the expiration of its hypothetic age.

Dimona is located in the Negev desert and is considered one of Israel’s most secret sites, where it forbids any photography.

However, an Israeli TV station aired last month a detailed video of Dimona, but it gave no close-ups of the reactor or interviews with officials speaking about the facility.

Israel maintains a policy of ambiguity concerning its nuclear program, neither admitting nor denying that it does posses nuclear weapons.

It has repeatedly claimed that Dimona reactor is solely used for peaceful purposes.
