how about left wing Newsweek has a different take?

Why is this a different take? While Sistani may indicate he is pro democracy, he is making it clear that that democracy will be within the restrictions imposed by the Sharia in the Koran......that is to be the basis for the new gov't along side any constitution. And where the constitution is not in lockstep with the Sharia, the Sharia will prevail.

The Sharia governs the every day life of the Muslim. It tends to take a very conservative view and is opposed by more secular Muslims. It allows the Muslim husband to beat his wife and to divorce her by saying three times, he is divorced. It places all kinds of restrictions re. dress, food and religious activities. While this may sound reasonable to you and Newsweek, for the secular Sunni Muslim, its akin to a death sentence.

Frankly, I don't know if Sistani is truly as he seems, or is simply playing us until he has firm control. Either way, we have little choice in the matter. He is in control and its very likely he is about to create another Iran. If we oppose him, the Shiites will rise up. We are in a no win situation.

So will it matter to you if in the end we create another Iran?
