You seem to be the one who is getting piffy about it....

You can count on my getting "piffy" when someone tries to shift the onus of his research questions in me. I've seen other posters here get "piffy" about that, too. "Do your own research" is a phrase commonly found on SI.

Who pays the employees, SS or SSI?????

Federal employees are paid from general funds. I don't know of any exceptions but there may be. I do not know for sure but it's likely that SS employees are paid from general funds. Different programs are paid out of different budget authorizations but as far as I know that is not a function of the source of those funds. I have a friend who worked at SSA. I will ask him. I have worked for programs that had their own income--the SEC, which raises money from fees, and Superfund, which takes in money from violators. In both cases, my salary still came out of the big pot at the treasury. I don't see any reason why SS employees would be different.

IF you have paid into SS, it IS your issue as well.

When I said it was your issue, I meant that you were the one who expressed concern about others being paid out of SS taxes. You said: "If SS is to ONLY include people who have worked and put money into the system, then these are the ONLY people who should be able to collect these funds." I responded to that to be helpful to you, not because I have any interest in the subject. No good deed goes unpunished. <g>

As for whether I'm covered by SS or not, I'm not. I have only a few quarters of contribution many, many years back. So I have no personal stake in what they do with the SS program. Even if I were covered, I wouldn't have a personal stake because I am old enough to be grandfathered into the current system. My interest in what they do with SS is simply the habit of a wonk and the interest of a good citizen.

If not, did your "Government Department" opt out?

There was no option for my department to opt in or out of SS. I know of no such provision to give federal departments any such option. The federal pension system was "reformed" in the mid eighties and future employees were put into SS for the first time. At around the same time, all federal employees were also put into Medicare for the first time.
