I'll bet the did! I bet they caught hell about it. This kind of thinking comes straight out of the Teacher's colleges that our teachers are required take courses in. It's a hangover from early 19th century socialism that taught that all kids should be made equal. Even JohnM used to agree with me that Teacher's colleges were a waste of time.

Charles Murrey was talking yesterday on C-SPAN about the requirement that people who want to teach have to go through two years of Teacher College nonsense in order to do so. It stops many math and science types that want to teach for a couple of years after getting a degree or after retirement from teaching.
