True. Kernighan and Ritchie worked at Bell Labs and wrote Unix. It grew in popularity there, then Bell Labs licensed it to UC-Berkeley for continued development and they cane out with the Berkeley Unix variant using graduate student slave labor. :-)

Kernighan and Ritchie also invented the C programming language. A small kernel of the Unix O/S was written in machine language, then the rest was written in C on top of it.
