Bechtolsheim's hot boxes will do the job if they're hot enough and get out into the marketplace while they're still relevant. I know people don't accept that Andy is a unique innovator, in the same class as Steve Jobs but without the hubris...he lets the inventions do the marketing. But he has an unmatched track record. Sun will not survive as an interesting company without breakthrough products, and Andy is their best chance of coming up with some, Sparc or no Sparc. Javastations/SunRays alone won't cut it.

It's true that if Sun paints themselves into SGI's old high-end corner they're toast, so Bechtolsheim's products must hit in the low-to mid-range, and hit big. They must go head-to-head with supposedly "commoditized" x86 hardware designs, and win. Yes, it's very hard to do. He can do it.
