JF, You assume the system is pure free market.

Actually, I'm not arguing in terms of the free market. I'm arguing in terms of what people expect. Right now with SS, the more you pay, the more you get come retirement. Most people like it that way, even though the current system is broken. (Or at least doesn't quite function that way.)

Sure, you can change SS to a progressive tax and have true welfare for the elderly, but why isn't any left-wing politician proposing that? My guess is that the idea will not sit well with the average American citizen, because most citizens, if given a choice, would rather choose a meritocracy over a communism.
