When you compare a number of traits from one person to another you are often implying that their are other similarities.

I disagree. If you specifically identify five things in common, that means that there are five things in common. If you identify five things and then add "etc" or an ellipse, then there are more than five things in common, unspecified things that the reader is free to imagine. Adding the "etc" is so easy and so common that, absent it, you have to assume that the list of five is complete.
