China claims bird flu vaccine advance

China's Ministry of Agriculture has approved two vaccines that it says offer poultry better protection against deadly bird flu.

The ministry described the release of the vaccines, which are intended to guard against the H5N1 strain of avian influenza that has killed dozens of people in Asia over the last year, as a "major breakthrough for our nation in the development and production of bird flu vaccines".

In a statement on its website, the ministry said that one of the vaccines had proved effective in trials at protecting chicken, ducks and geese from H5N1.

Chickens were protected for more than 10 months compared with the six months achieved by existing vaccines, it said.

The vaccines were developed using "advanced technology", including reverse genetics, at the Key Laboratory of Animal Influenza of the China's Harbin Veterinary Research Institute.

The ministry said it had instructed all relevant arms of government to promote the use of the vaccines in places affected by bird flu.

It is unclear how much difference the new vaccines will make in the fight against bird flu. China has used both widespread vaccination and mass culls to contain previous outbreaks.
