Mahmoud Abbas is his given name, and Abu Mazen is his nom de guerre... many Arab leaders tend to have them.

Arafat's was "Abu Amar." There's also Ahmed Qureia, who was the PM under Arafat for a short time -- his nom de guerre is "Abu Ala." I don't know any others.

Fine, but why? To my knowledge, its not customary to pick a new name when you become a person of significant standing anywhere else in Arabia.

Ya know, this guys has been prominent in the news for about two years, and I can't recall ever hearing an explanation as to why he has two names.

Mahmoud Abbas is his given name, and Abu Mazen is his nom de guerre... many Arab leaders tend to have them.

Its because many Arab leaders are fathers. I think it has to do with the birth of child. I believe Abu Mazen means the father of Mazen who would be his first born son.

Z,

I just read that all subsidies to Amtrak are to be cut by Bush's budget. That means all intercity passenger train travel in the US will come to an end. Makes sense........most of the heavily used trains are in the blue states.
