As the saying goes, "you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink."

If the US provides the framework for a democracy to Iraq, they will be freer than they would under a murderous dictatorship such as they had. Any incremental increase in freedom makes the world a better place. It also increases the value of all investments in any investment vehicle anywhere in the world.

The cause is simple, self-interested people do what is in their perceived best interests. If I open a mini mart on the corner, it increases the value of an investment in Altria, Procter & Gamble, Slumbreger, etc. Those increases filter through all other related parties, and eventually the rising tide raises all ships. Small increments remain small. Obviously the localized effects are more pronounced than than ones more unrelated.

This implies that neighboring countries will benefit from the freedom in Iraq. I have long predicted that a fully free Iraq would establish an economy with a similar effect on neighboring countries to the relationship between the US and Mexico. I continue to harbor this belief.
