I just did a quick search of the "October Surprise" since I have never heard of it. If even half of what is alleged is true, then Bush I should have been put up for trial. Having said that, why didn't Carter pursue the matter after he left office? Was it just another alleged conspiracy case or is it real? If real, I have to believe someone on the Dem. side would have pursued it. "What do you see as the stick?" Here is one. For most of the 19th and 20th century, the label "liberal" had few, if any, negative connotations. It does now. Not only in the US, although the negative aspects started here, but it is becoming global. When you let your opponent define you, you lose. Politics 101. When you let your opponent define you? With freedom of the press, you don't have to let your opponent define you........they have the right to do it. Besides, its not a matter of defining......they lie and slander someone in a way that is difficult to defend or counter........a prime example was Kerry and the Swift Boats. No matter what Kerry or his Vietnam supporters said........there will always be some doubt. They are using similar tactics employed by McCarthy. Fighting back effectively is very difficult to do. "No one suggested that politics was dodgeball but the GOP is playing war games, not competitive politics." Oh duh. That has been the way the game has been played in the US for centuries. What about "Ma, Ma, where's my Pa"? We have he equivalent of the opposition paying waifs to show up at speeches and claim that they are the illegimate offspring of the candidate. That has been the historical norm in American politics, Sorry, CJ, that's news to me. In my history textbooks, those kind of politicians when they existed were thrown in jail or at least did not get re elected. it has only been in the post WWII period that there has been any pretense that it was different. In some places, it wasn't pretense. The Dims want to pretend that it is all about issues. And it should be. But if one side is playing issues and the other is playing smear, issues will lose everytime. Why do you think Fox News is so popular? Clue: it isn't because they actually report news. And this isn't because civilization has declined, this is the norm. Apparently, I am uninformed. I did not realize that FOX News was the norm. Then what are CNN and NBC....malfunctioning aberrations? How have they been able to stay in business so long? "On this I agree, but how do you confront an enemy that believes anything goes; that uses lies as if they were truths." You confront lies with truth. You don't allow them to squirm, you hammer at their weaknesses at every opportunity. If you abandon the truth, like Kerry did, you lose. You then make their lies equivalent to the truth. And then it become who appears the most sincere. Unfortunately, liars can appear to be very sincere. However, they can't document their lies, and that is where they can fail. Failing to demand documentation at every turn is a losing strategy. Well on this point, we agree. "You, yourself, have said that you thought Rove capable of setting up Dan Rather. That speaks volumes. " Sure I did. And the fact that it happened, despite the fact that anyone who knows anything about the history, speaks volumes. When someone has a long history of being a cut throat is treated like a rational and reasonable human being, that shows a significant amount of denial of reality. Instead of dealing with reality, the Dims play "let's pretend". I think for many people its hard to believe that Rove is that crafty and malevolent. ted
