Nah. The 'inside-the-beltway' Democrat pols didn't want an outsider insurgent to take the game away from them.

*Particularly* a former-Physician, former-Governor, who had balanced budgets during each of four consecutive terms... and who appealed to the young of the Party.

Too much of a threat to the Party insiders to let this outsider take the lead.
