Standard & Poor's Equity Research said consolidation of telecommunications service providers may cause delays in capital spending. The research firm said Nortel Networks (nyse: NT - news - people ) is likely to be hurt by the acquisition of MCI (nasdaq: MCIP - news - people ) by Verizon Communications (nyse: VZ - news - people ), since Nortel has been MCI's key vendor. "We believe Alcatel (nyse: ALA - news - people ) and Lucent (nyse: LU - news - people ) will remain strategic vendors for Verizon," S&P Equity Research said, adding that second-tier suppliers such as Ciena (nasdaq: CIEN - news - people ) may be at risk. S&P Equity Research favors Qualcomm (nasdaq: QCOM - news - people ) for wireless and Cisco Systems (nasdaq: CSCO - news - people ) in IP networking. Both Qualcomm and Cisco are rated "strong buy" by the research firm.
