I think it is a matter of public education, Coug. In the 19th century in America, dogs were used to run all sorts of grinding wheels and pull heavy carts in factories and such. They were slaves to capitalism, and led short, miserable, lives.

Some more sensitive people started believing that was wrong, and that is why the humane societies in America were founded, to stop the abuse. People used to be fascinated by monkeys performing stunts in the organ grinder costumes, and other public animal spectacles most Americans don't tolerate anymore. Now animal rights organizations are trying to make more people understand how cruel zoos and circuses are.

Progress is being made, but you have to start somewhere. I don't think people realize how many millions of perfectly nice and loving dogs and cats are euthanized every year because their original people give them up and new homes cannot be found for them. I didn't really think about it either when we got our dogs. We bought purebred puppies from breeders. It is all a matter of education. Now that I know more about how many animals are awaiting new homes, I would always adopt from a shelter.

I read an article a few weeks ago urging American tourists not to take elephant rides when they vacation in Thailand. In order to break and train the elephants, their owners put the babies in enclosures where their mothers can see them but not help them, and then torture them to break their spirits so they are good work animals who will make a lot of money for the owners. Thee babies cry, and their mothers do, but they are helpless. This goes on for months. The article really broke my heart.
