Sorry, I thought it was straight forward. 1) Marriage is an institution that carries a broad context helping to define society as a family based progression of offspring that are incultured to relate as families, tribes, social groups, nations, etc. It also carries the hope and future of values systems, hereditary traditions, and principle forward to future generations. 2) Marriage is also one, but not the only, institution that legitimizes cohabitation between two people in America. The argument being put forward by your left wing friends is flawed in its attempt to discount the first item I have listed and secondly to proclaim that marriage is the 'only' possible way for gays to cohabitate on the same legitimate grounds as heterosexuals. In addition the argument on the left proclaims falsely that not having a marriage denies them the freedom to XXX legitimately. So, by supporting the notion that the following must be universally applied to relationships, and not doing so is an act of discrimination and denial of freedom, bolsters the left argument as described above and wipes out 1) and 2) above. "Marriage is the way our societies legitimize and recognize a relationship." That is your position as I understand it. I was asking you to comment on your support of wiping out 1 and 2 above. It IS a very relevant issue. It is presicely what happens when you eliminate the traditional marriage and make 'gay marriage' indistiguishable from tratitional marriage. It becomes only a licence to co-habitate and XXX and be recognized as such by public and private legal systems.
