There was a fascinating "Frontline" on last night about Saudi Arabia. In it, it was revealed that we told Saudi Arabia outright that we'd invade their country and take over their oil during the oil embargo of the '70's if they continued with the embargo.
Also, Roosevelt had promised Saudi Arabia that we would not support the founding of the State of Israel in the U.N. The Saudis had pointed out that what the Germans had done to the Jews was terrible, but why was the world contemplating displacing Palestinian Arabs that had nothing to do with it to make amends? Why not just carve out a piece of Germany, the guilty nation, as a Jewish homeland?
Truman took over before the matter was decided, and supported Israel in Palestine, as we have been doing ever since. You have to wonder what the world would be like today if he had not. Another proposal was to buy land in Brazil for the creation of the state of Israel.
