The SciFi ending would be the gene moving into all plants on earth, creating the "final generation" of plants. Then, we'd have no plants, no air..all because some greedy corporations wanted to corner the seed market.

It doesn't seem likely for this one to get away (how do you pass on a trait like infertility?) But, I can see how lateral gene transfer through a natural or engineered virus (like Tobacco Mosaic Virus) could infect other plants, producing this trait. That generates the effect that you describe.

This is unconscionable, IMO.
