<Please note that I didn't say that all of the terrorists were affluent. However, a huge proportion of them clearly were.>

There are almost daily suicide car bombings in Iraq -- I seriously doubt that it is the sons and daughters of the affluent who are dying in these numbers.

As for the appeal of "revolution" to educated people and the sons and daughters of the affluent - this is undeniable. The issue that was raised had more to do with the ability of terrorism to reach mass movement scale and the assertion made was that when people have a stake in the future they become harder to recruit. As for who is doing the recruiting and who provides the leadership, it is most like the disaffected affluent and educated people. But when, later today ot tomorrow, somebody in Iraq throws a switch to blast themselves into the arms of the virgins, it would seem to stretch credulity to assert that a "huge proportion" of them are the educated and affluent elite.

I think the terrorist that pull off large operations, or pull off operations on the other side of the world from their original home and/or from where they where trained tend to be more educated and from a wealthier background. Those that strap on a suicide bomber's vest or who grab a rifle and take a few pot shots at local civilians who they consider the enemy tend to not be so educated.
