Not all of the routes are loss making, and even without the subsidies some loss making routs can be kept if they don't lose too much and have a shot at eventually profitability.

Eliminating subsidies means eliminating some or most non-profitable routes not eliminating Amtrak


It means eliminating them all with the exception of the NE corridor because Bush has set aside 360K for that route. There are only two routes in the US that come close to being breakeven........the NE corridor and the LA-SD routes. I think the tickets for the NE corridor pay 85% of the operating expenses and the LA-SD tickets pay 80% of operating expenses........I should point out those were figures from 4-5 years ago.
