Reminds me of the anti-tobacco initiative of some years back. Big Tobacco actually turned the vote around by dumping money into the state. California's initiative process shows what's wrong with uninformed direct democracy. A well-funded campaign can change public opinion on emotionalism alone. They were still trying to say there was some doubt about the health effects and tried to turn it into a civil rights issue. I used to smoke - it wasn't a civil rights issue but one of marketing and cynical lack of consideration for the effects of using their products as intended.
